HANOI ARRIVAL

Upon arrival in Hanoi, your guide and private car will meet you and transfer you to your hotel for check-in. Vietnam’s quaint capital is a city of wide tree-lined boulevards with tranquil lakes and colonial villas and a more sedate pace than other Asian cities. Hanoi offers something for everyone and will leave you wishing that you had longer to explore this enthralling capital. Depending on your arrival time, visit the city’s Ethnology Museum (closed on Mondays) to explore Vietnam's diverse culture through the Museum’s unique presentation of articles and dress used in daily life.

This evening, experience a Tuong performance which is a traditional form of entertainment in northern Vietnam. (Depending on the day you arrive, the performance may be a Ca Tru performance instead.) Tuong is a kind of traditional Vietnamese tragicomedy and comic opera combining song, dance and theatre into a highly entertaining hours show Ca Tru is an ancient genre of chamber music featuring female vocalists, with origins in northern Vietnam. For much of its history, it was associated with a geisha-like form of entertainment. Note: if Ca Tru or Tuong are not available on this evening a traditional water puppet performance will be seen instead.

Your dinner will be held in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter in the home of a true Hanoian who learnt her culinary skills from her grandmother who used to cook for the French elite in the 1930’s.

HANOI – DUONG LAM – TAY PHUONG – HANOI (B,L,D)

Rise early and head to Hanoi Botanical Gardens for a 40 minute Tai Chi session. Proper breathing and concentration are an
integral part of the practice of any martial art and the Tai Chi taught is suitable both for those with no prior experience, and
those who have already studied other martial arts.

After, head back to your hotel for breakfast before departing for today’s excursion west from Hanoi to Duong Lam village,
a purely agricultural village of the Northern Red River Delta that still preserves many hundred-year-old houses. Visit Mong Phu
temple in Mong Phu commune - the only hamlet whose original village entrance remains intact. Continue on through the narrow alleys to see the old laterite houses which make up this charming village. For lunch enjoy a local style meal in a 100-year old house.

After your meal, continue driving to Mia Pagoda (another hamlet of Duong Lam) built in the 15th century Some 287 statues of all sizes can be seen here including famous sculptures such as the statue of Buddha and the statues of the ‘Eight Vajra Deities’. Then, visit Ngo Quyen temple and Phung Hung temple, places dedicated to two national heroes - Ngo Quyen and Phung Hung. Lastly, on the way back to Hanoi, stop at Tay Phuong Pagoda. The pagoda offers beautiful architecture and ancient, unique sculptures. It was one of the first pagodas built in Vietnam and has magnificent dragons and demons carved into the wooden roof. From here continue back to Hanoi, a 45-minute drive.

You will be right in time to catch the beautiful evening light from Pre Rup, a pyramidal temple surrounded by a sea of rice fields.

HANOI – CRAFT VILLAGES (B, L)

This morning travel just outside of the busy capital city for a unique look into the traditions and cultures of rural Vietnamese communities. For centuries, the villages around Hanoi have specialized in single-commodity production, each family sharing their knowledge only within their neighborhood. This specially-designed tour takes you to some of the best of these villages to see crafts such as conical hats, bird cage making and a lovely traditional wood village.

Head back to Hanoi for lunch and in the afternoon have a visit with a traditional doctor. HANOI CITY TOUR (B, L)

Hanoi is fast becoming one of the most fashionable art centers in Asia. This insider tour helps you discover the intriguing people and places of the Hanoi art world. Our knowledgeable guide will take you to the most interesting and important museums and galleries as well as some quirky galleries and arty hang-outs far from the regular tourist trail. After lunch, step into the home of one of Hanoi’s most respected families. The head of the house is the Director of the National Committee on Disability in Vietnam who can trace his lineage throughout the courts of several emperors to the Gia Long era of the Nguyen Dynasty in the early 1800’s. His cosy family home in the centre of Hanoi is filled with antiques, artefacts and family photographs. (Note: this home visit is subject to availability, must be reserved two weeks in advance, has a two person minimum and can accommodate maximum 8 people).

From here, continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in grandeur and is well-known for its 54 towers with enigmatic faces representing the 54 provinces of the Great Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs.

In the afternoon embark on an interesting boat trip on the Tonlé Sap Lake, where you will have the opportunity to learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake with its size varying greatly depending on the season, as it is swelling to about four times it size during the wet season. Board a local boat and visit Kampong Phluck, a village where you will see houses on stilts that are submerged when Tonlé Sap Lake extends. On the way, you will pass floating houses and impressive flooded forests, portraying life on the water. (NOTE: Due to low water levels during the dry season, the boat trip is only possible from June to March. However an alternative floating village at Chong Kneas can be arranged instead). The rest of this afternoon and evening at leisure.

    Insurance

There are hundreds of circumstances that could cause you to cancel your trip, return home early or force you to seek emergency medical treatment while traveling.

To demonstrate the importance of purchasing travel insurance, and emergency travel services, here are 10 common examples of what could go wrong.

    • Your first visit to Europe, and your passport and wallet are stolen. Where do you turn for emergency cash, and how will you get your passport replaced?
    • You're involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. Who will help arrange and pay for a medical evacuation?
    • If your sister-in-law becomes seriously ill and you must cancel your trip, what happens to your non-refundable deposits or pre-payments?
    • You arrive in Jamaica and your luggage doesn't. If it's lost, who will help you find it? If it's delayed, who will pay for your necessities? If it's stolen, who will pay to replace it?
    • You're walking down a street in Rio and twist your ankle. Who can help you find an English-speaking physician?
